Magic Wand

Okay, so I work in Photoshop a lot, and I’ve been using it for over twelve years. I’m usually quite good with it, and if there’s a hiccup I can figure it out pretty quickly.┬áBut today I was baffled for a good 30 minutes or so. I had to reboot twice, thinking that would help; I went to get coffee to clear my head; it was really puzzling.

The magic wand tool, something I’ve used millions of times (not hyperbole) wouldn’t work properly.

I used it for an identical task yesterday for at least two or three hours. It was a simple click-and-fill situation, but it kept finding selection edges well beyond the borders of my neat little sections.┬áThis drove me nuts: I triple-checked every setting I could find, even in places that shouldn’t have anything to do with this tool. I looked at Channels, Paths, other tool settings. I couldn’t figure it out. And you know what it was?

The $@%# Eyedropper tool. I had changed its settings earlier to get a broader color sample, and apparently that thing directly affects how the Magic Wand finds selection areas! So annoying.

So, be careful of your various tool settings, you never know what’s going to affect something else!

iPhone 4… in space!

iPhone 4 wallpaper

Here’s a quick space-themed wallpaper I made for the iPhone 4. Gotta love that high resolution!

Roark

Roark

Some concept sketches for a sci-fi engineer-type character (and a family crest?) I was working on. Still working on, actually. D20 Modern, people, it’s a great gaming system.

Too Bad

Some concepts for a music logo, with a heavenly theme, which I developed for a logo contest. Sadly, it was not chosen.

Imagine

Must. Contain. Excitement.

October 8, 2010: Nowhere Boy is coming to theaters. It’s a film about a 15-year-old John Lennon. Yes, that John Lennon. I have to say, it looks pretty good, although it’s clear that it only covers his pre-Beatles career. Paul shows up in the trailer, and George is listed in the cast, but no Ringo.

The question is, will the inevitable follow? A full-length feature film about the most successful rock band in history? One can only hope, but it’s hard to imagine anyone could be capable of creating such a movie: Something that could actually live up to the hype that such an announcement would generate. In the meantime, we must be patient.

Demonizer

This is a demon. A smelly, awful, evil demon. Or so it would seem.

Odysseus

Just found another character that I drew up for someone’s D&D profile. He called him Odysseus, or “Ody” for short. (No relation to Garfield’s half-witted, canine companion.) I drew this entirely in Adobe Illustrator with my Wacom tablet, my preferred method of illustration.

Although it has a different touch from true hand-drawn art, there are certain benefits to a digital vector file: I can scale it up or down to whatever size I want, and it stays as sharp as ever. I can edit the line work as I go, and Illustrator’s brush tool allows for a certain amount of auto-correction. Plus, the tablet is pressure-sensitive, so with the right tools, your lines come out with varying widths, which I think looks awesome.

One day, I will purchase Wacom’s 24″ Cintiq. It is a thing of beauty. It will be mine… oh yes, it will be mine!

Gevat

This is a character I created for a Dungeons & Dragons campaign (yes, I play D&D). He’s an appropriately greedy merchant who nevertheless has a heart of gold… buried under a lot of jewelry of gold.

Oh, and those are eyebrows, not sunglasses or anything like that.
